Best AI Tools for Teachers in 2026 (Free Options for Lesson Plans and Grading)

By Andrew · October 24, 2026

Individual teachers can cover lesson planning and a first pass on feedback without a paid AI subscription. MagicSchool and Brisk Teaching are free for individual teachers. Khanmigo is free for teachers and $4/month for families. ChatGPT for Teachers is a separate free plan for verified U.S. K–12 educators through June 2027. Pay only when a school wants admin controls, or when a general chatbot’s free cap blocks work the school has already allowed.

Prices are US list prices. Education-tool prices were taken from vendor pages on October 16, 2026. The ChatGPT for Teachers window is from OpenAI’s pricing FAQ on October 24, 2026. Fit labels describe the product each company sells. They are not scores from a classroom trial. This is not education-law advice. Your district’s policy decides what may touch student work.

What “free for teachers” actually includes

MagicSchool says the free plan is ongoing for individual teachers, not a trial. Plus is $8.33 per user per month billed annually or $12.99 billed monthly. Enterprise is custom for districts that want oversight. MagicSchool says it is SOC 2 certified and FERPA and COPPA compliant, and that student and teacher data is not used to train AI. Teachers can generate lesson material, presentations, and report-card comments, and use the Raina assistant. The output still needs a teacher who knows the class. A comment generator is a first draft of tone, not a judgment of the student.

Brisk is a Chrome and Edge extension that works inside Google Docs, Slides, YouTube, PDFs, and LMS pages, with a Microsoft path as well. The company describes 30+ tools, including lesson plans, quizzes, rubrics, reading-level changes, translation, and Glow and Grow feedback. The free teacher plan has fewer tools than the school plans (the materials we checked described 20+ tools and standard models on free, against 35+ on paid school plans). Premium and Intelligence are custom. Brisk cites a 95% Common Sense Privacy rating. School plans are where standards alignment, admin dashboards, and data agreements show up.

Khanmigo is the different product: a tutor that is built to ask questions rather than hand over the finished answer, tied to Khan Academy’s content. Teachers get planning help, rubrics, exit tickets, and summaries of student work at no charge. A family plan is $4/month or $44/year, plus tax, and can cover up to 10 children, with a parent view of the history and moderation alerts. District tools add student access, SSO, and rostering through Clever or ClassLink. Use Khanmigo when the student should struggle productively. Use MagicSchool or Brisk when the teacher is the person in the chair at 9 p.m.

Grading and feedback, with the data rule first

“AI grading” in 2026, for an individual teacher, means a faster first pass on writing you are allowed to process. It does not mean an unreviewed score in the gradebook.

A defensible order:

  1. Read your school’s AI and student-data rules. If they say consumer accounts are off limits, they are off limits. MagicSchool, Brisk on a school plan, and Khanmigo on a district agreement are the products that publish education privacy claims. A personal ChatGPT or Claude login is not those products.
  2. Strip names and IDs if the approved tool does not need them. Ask for comments against a rubric you paste, in the voice you specify.
  3. Change anything that could only have been written by someone who did not read the paper. Students can tell.
  4. Keep the score yours. If a parent asks how the grade was decided, “the model said so” is not a reason.

Brisk’s feedback tools (Glow and Grow, rubric comments, Inspect Writing) are aimed at this pass inside the document. Khanmigo’s teacher tools include summarizing student work. MagicSchool includes report-card comment help. All three still require the teacher who saw the draft.

ChatGPT for Teachers, on OpenAI’s pricing FAQ as of October 24, 2026, is free for verified U.S. K–12 educators through June 2027, with enhanced security and privacy controls and admin features for schools and districts. That is not the same thing as ChatGPT Free or Plus on a personal account. ChatGPT Edu is the campus product, priced separately. If you teach outside U.S. K–12, do not assume the free teacher plan applies. The consumer tier choice, if your school allows a personal account for non-student work, is ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro.

Lesson plans that are actually usable on Monday

Give the tool the constraints a colleague would need:

  • Grade, subject, and the time you really have (not a 60-minute block if the class is 42)
  • The standard or objective, pasted, not “align to standards” with no text
  • What students already know
  • Materials in the room
  • What you will not assign (a project that needs colored paper you do not have)

Then ask for an exit ticket and one adaptation, not a 12-page unit. MagicSchool and Brisk are built around that shape. Gemini Notebook is the better tool when the source is a chapter, a PDF, or a slide deck you want students to question. The rename from NotebookLM, and what stayed free, is covered in NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook. Study workflows for students are in how to use Gemini Notebook for studying.

Canva Free is enough for a one-page handout. Canva’s education story is separate from the teacher AI tools above. Use it for layout, not for the lesson’s claims.

Quizlet Free still covers flashcards and practice. We did not confirm the current Plus price, so it is not in the paid column. It is a study tool, not a lesson planner.

What to skip

  • A $20 consumer chatbot for grading identified student work, unless the school has said that account is approved.
  • Any tool that offers to “do the grading” unattended. You still own the grade.
  • District-priced products for a single classroom. MagicSchool Plus is the published individual upgrade. Brisk’s paid plans are school and district sales.
  • Uploading IEPs, behavior notes, or contact details to find out what a tool can do.

FAQ

What is the best free AI for lesson plans?

MagicSchool and Brisk are the two products in this directory that publish an ongoing free plan for individual teachers and are built for that job. Khanmigo is free for teacher planning and is the better student tutor. ChatGPT for Teachers is free for verified U.S. K–12 educators through June 2027 and is a general assistant, not a lesson-plan library.

Can teachers use AI to grade?

They can use an approved tool to draft comments against a rubric. The score, the academic-integrity call, and the decision to put anything in the gradebook stay with the teacher. Identifiable student work belongs only in tools your school allows.

Is Khanmigo the same as ChatGPT?

No. Khanmigo is Khan Academy’s tutor and teaching assistant, priced at $0 for teachers and $4/month or $44/year for learners and families. It is designed to guide students instead of giving the final answer. ChatGPT is a general assistant with a separate teacher plan.
