What Is AI Idempotency? (2026): The Same Request, Once
By Andrew · October 24, 2026
AI idempotency means a repeated request for the same action produces the side effect once. The model may be called twice. The email, the charge, the ticket, or the row is created once. You get that by attaching a key you chose, and by making the tool honor the key. Hoping the model “remembers” it already sent the email is not a key.
Collapsing identical calls that are still in flight is what AI request coalescing is. Choosing which tool runs next is what tool-calling orchestration is. The product that decides to call tools at all is what an AI agent is. The log line that shows the key is what structured logging for AI is.

What has to be true
| Piece | You write it | A retry without it |
|---|---|---|
| The key | A stable id for this intended action | A new id on every attempt, so every attempt is “new” |
| The scope | Which system must honor the key: the mailer, the ledger, the help desk | A key the model sees and the tool ignores |
| The window | How long a duplicate still counts as the same action | Forever, or five seconds, with no decision |
| The stored result | The first success, returned again on a retry | A second success that looks like the first |
| The owner | The person who can stop the tool | A prompt that says “please do not send twice” |

A prompt that says “only send once” is a wish. The mail API that rejects the second key is the control. The person who approves a send that spends money or reaches a customer is what human-in-the-loop AI is.
Where the duplicate comes from
A tool call the agent retries. Timeouts lie. The message may have sent before the error returned. Retrying with a new key sends it again. Lindy Team starts at $49.99 a month for 5,000 credits, on the directory card. Credits meter the assistant. They do not make a tool idempotent. Read the tool you connected.
A workflow that runs twice. Zapier Professional is $19.99 a month billed annually, with 750 tasks, after a 14-day trial. A task can complete and still be retried by a human who clicks Run again. If the Zap creates a row, the row’s unique key has to live in the destination, not in the prompt. n8n Cloud Starter is €20 a month billed annually on the directory card. This page leaves that price in euros because that is how the card records it.
A model that drafts the same email in two tabs. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 billed annually. Two drafts are fine. Two sends are the bug. The send button stays with a person unless the downstream system dedupes on a key you set. The record of what was sent is what a system of record for AI is.
What idempotency does not cover
It does not make a wrong action safe. A single charge for the wrong amount is still wrong. It does not merge two different intents that happen to look similar. If the customer asked for two refunds, two keys are correct. It does not replace an approval on a payment, a deletion, or a message to a customer.
If you cannot tell whether the first attempt worked, the retry uses the same key and the tool tells you. Guessing, and sending a second email “just in case,” is the failure this page is about.
FAQ
Is idempotency the same as coalescing?
Coalescing joins callers who are waiting on one in-flight request. Idempotency covers a retry that arrives after the first attempt may already have succeeded. You want both when agents call tools. They solve different clocks.
Can the model generate the key?
It can copy a key you passed in. It should not invent a new key on the retry. Generate the key in your app, from the business action, and pass it through. A key the model makes up on each attempt will never match.
How long should the window be?
As long as a retry of this action is still the same action. A password reset and a monthly invoice do not share a window. Write the window next to the key. A default you copied from a blog, including this one, is not your window.
What do we store?
The key, the first result, and the time. Store enough to replay the result. Do not store a secret that the tool did not need to keep. The log can hold the key and the status. It does not need the full customer message if your policy says that message stays in the system of record.
