What Is Structured Output in AI? (2026): A Shape the Next System Can Parse

By Andrew · October 24, 2026

Structured output means the model’s answer has to fit a shape you defined, so the next system can parse it without guessing. A schema for fields, types, and required keys is the usual shape. A prompt that says “reply in JSON” is a request. The model can still add a sentence, drop a key, or invent a value. Structured output, when the vendor actually enforces it, is the difference between a request and a parse.

The nearby idea, calling a tool with arguments, is what function calling is. The wider habit is what tool use is. The pieces being constrained are still tokens.

Prices are US list prices excluding tax from directory pages checked October 16, 2026. Published October 24, 2026. This page does not name an API parameter the directory does not record. Read the card you will call.

Request versus a shape the parser accepts

What you didWhat you can rely onWhat still fails
“Reply in JSON” in the promptOften a JSON-looking stringExtra prose, missing keys, a trailing comma
A schema the API enforcesThe response matches the schema, if the vendor’s docs say it doesA value that is the wrong fact, in the right type
Function callingArguments for a tool you namedThe model picks the wrong tool, or the tool is wrong
A workflow with fixed fieldsZapier or Make maps those fieldsThe text you mapped was invented upstream

A valid shape is not a true shape. A schema can require revenue to be a number. The model can still put a number you never provided. Validate the type. Then check the value against the source. The failure is what an AI hallucination is. The check, when the source has to be openable, is what AI grounding is.

Where this shows up in the directory

DeepSeek lists tool calls and JSON output among the API features on the directory page. Flash is $0.30 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens at peak, and half of that off-peak. JSON does not get its own price on that card. You pay for the tokens. The review is DeepSeek review. If you are sending a pile of rows overnight, the schedule and the batch idea are what batch inference is.

ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. Claude Pro is $20, or $17 billed annually. Both can be asked for a table or for JSON in the chat box. That is the prompt kind. An application that must parse every response needs the API behavior the vendor documents, plus a validator in your code. A seat is the wrong place to promise a parser that never throws. The API split is what an API for AI tools is.

If the next step is a workflow you drew, you may not need a model to emit JSON at all. Zapier Professional is $19.99 a month billed annually for 750 tasks. Make Core is from $9 a month billed annually for 10,000 credits. Map the fields yourself. Let the model draft the text that goes in one field, and reject the run when that field is empty. The comparison is Zapier vs Make vs n8n. n8n’s cloud price was shown in euros on October 16. This page does not convert it.

What to put in the schema

Put the fields you will store. Mark the ones that may be unknown. An optional unknown is safer than a required string the model will fill to satisfy you. Do not ask the schema to invent a metric, a customer name, or a legal conclusion.

Keep the schema small. A 40-field object is a form nobody can review. If a person has to approve the row, show them the row, not the raw JSON. That approval is what human-in-the-loop AI is.

Enums help when the list is closed: status is done, next, or blocked. They hurt when the list is open and you forgot a value. The model will pick the nearest allowed value. That is a structured mistake.

FAQ

Is structured output the same as function calling?

They overlap. Function calling returns arguments for a tool. Structured output returns an object for your program. You can use both. A tool call is not automatically a complete record of the facts.

Can I get structured output from a chat subscription?

You can ask for JSON and then parse it. Expect failures. Production parsing belongs on an API mode the vendor enforces, with your own validation. Plus and Pro are usage seats, not a schema guarantee.

Does a schema stop hallucinations?

It stops some format failures. It does not stop a false number in a valid field. Check values against the source you provided. If the source did not contain the value, the field should be empty.

Should the schema include an explanation field?

Only if a person will read it. A parser does not need a paragraph. A paragraph inside the object is where unsupported claims hide. Put the reason in a review screen, or leave it out.
