What Adobe Firefly is

Adobe Firefly is two things: a family of Adobe-built generative models, and the Firefly app (web and mobile) where you use them. Firefly powers features across Creative Cloud, including Generative Fill in Photoshop, Generative Extend in Premiere and text-to-image in Adobe Express. In the Firefly app itself you can generate images, video, audio, sound effects and vectors, and you can also pick partner models from companies such as Google, OpenAI, ElevenLabs and Topaz.

Adobe positions Firefly as commercially safe: the company says its Firefly models were trained on licensed content such as Adobe Stock and on public-domain content where copyright has expired. That matters for agencies and brands that need to know where their assets come from.

Key features

Image generation and editing

Text to image with Firefly Image models (including Image 4 Ultra and Image 5 as premium options), style and structure references, and generative editing. On paid plans, standard image generations are unlimited.

Video

Generate Video turns text or an image into short clips. In Premiere, Generative Extend adds frames to the start or end of a clip. Video is a premium feature and uses credits per second.

Audio and translation

Translate Video and Translate Audio dub speech into other languages, and Generate Sound Effects and Generate Music create audio. Text to speech is available with Firefly Speech or ElevenLabs.

Partner models

Pick third-party models inside Firefly. They count as premium features and use your credits.

Custom models (beta) and Firefly Graph

Train a custom model on your own assets (500 credits per training, 20 per generation) and build node-based workflows in Firefly Graph.

Pricing breakdown

Sample credit costs from Adobe’s rate card: Generate Video uses 20 credits per second at 540p, 50 at 720p and 100 at 1080p; Firefly Image 5 uses 10 credits per generation; Generate Music uses 20 credits per minute. If Premium users run out, video generations are queued and processed in the background. Creative Cloud Pro also includes 4,000 premium credits a month.

Best use cases

  • Campaign imagery: a marketing team generates lifestyle backgrounds for a product launch, then finishes them in Photoshop.
  • Social video: a creator turns a product still into a 5-second animated clip for Reels.
  • Localization: an online course creator translates a lesson video into Spanish and French with Translate Video.
  • Sound design: a podcaster generates short sound effects for transitions.

How to get started

  1. Go to firefly.adobe.com and sign in with an Adobe account.
  2. Try Text to image on the free tier to learn prompting.
  3. Choose a model from the model picker; note which ones are premium.
  4. Use reference images for composition and style to keep results consistent.
  5. Check your credit balance in your Adobe Account menu before generating video.
  6. Upgrade to Standard or Pro when you need unlimited standard images or video.

Tips and tricks

  • Test video at 540p first (20 credits per second), then render the final at 1080p.
  • Use Pro instead of separate subscriptions if you also want Express Premium and Photoshop on web and mobile.
  • Write prompts like a shot list: subject, setting, lighting, camera angle, mood.
  • Check beta labels before using outputs in client work.
