ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude (2026): Which AI Assistant Should You Actually Use?

By Andrew · October 24, 2026

Use ChatGPT if you want one assistant that also creates images, talks, and codes. Use Claude if the job is writing and long documents. Use Gemini if your work already lives in Gmail, Docs, and Drive. Most people only need one paid plan in the $20 range. Add Perplexity when every answer must show its sources.

This comparison covers ChatGPT (OpenAI), Google Gemini (Google), and Claude (Anthropic). Prices are US list prices from each company’s public pricing pages, last verified October 16, 2026. We did not run a scored lab test. The fit labels below describe documented product scope, not a measured quality score.

The short answer

If this is your main jobStart herePaid plan most people buy
Mixed work: writing, images, voice, and some codingChatGPTPlus, $20/month
Long documents, careful writing, and analysisClaudePro, $20/month or $17/month billed annually
Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Android, plus image and videoGeminiGoogle AI Pro, $19.99/month
Answers you can click through to a sourcePerplexityPro, $17/month billed annually
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OutlookMicrosoft CopilotMicrosoft 365 Premium, $19.99/month

Free tiers are good enough to test. Run the same three real tasks in each app — a document you actually have, a question you will fact-check, and a piece of writing in your voice — and keep the assistant you edit the least.

Figure (decision diagram, not a product screenshot). Alt: Flowchart for choosing an AI assistant in 2026. If your files are in Google Workspace, start with Gemini. If you write or analyze long documents, start with Claude. If you need images, voice, and a coding agent in one app, start with ChatGPT. If citations matter on every answer, add Perplexity.

How the three assistants differ

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s general assistant on the web, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. The current consumer lineup is built on the GPT-6 family. Free accounts get unlimited text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory, and Codex. Plus adds advanced reasoning, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, and expanded Codex usage.

Claude is Anthropic’s assistant, also on web, desktop, and mobile, with a Chrome extension and Microsoft 365 support on paid plans. It is built around Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models, Projects, Artifacts, Research, and file creation. Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent, is included with Pro and Max. Anthropic lists model training as opt-out on Free, Pro, and Max.

Gemini is Google’s assistant, available with a Google account and inside Google apps on paid plans. Google says the Gemini app has more than 1 billion monthly users. Free includes the Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, and 15 GB of storage. Paid Google AI plans add higher usage, video generation, Google Flow credits, and more storage.

A useful fourth option sits beside them rather than instead of them. Perplexity is an answer engine: it searches the web and attaches citations. It is the better default when the output is a researched answer, not a draft.

Fit by job

Labels mean: Strong — the product is built for this and the relevant feature is on a normal paid plan; Partial — possible, with tighter limits or a weaker fit; Limited — not the reason to buy it.

Which $20 plan is the default?

For a single professional subscription, the three plans that compete directly are ChatGPT Plus ($20), Claude Pro ($20, or $17 annual), and Google AI Pro ($19.99).

  • Choose ChatGPT Plus when you want images, voice, custom GPTs, and Codex without a second subscription. See Cursor vs Claude Code vs Codex if coding is the main reason you would upgrade.
  • Choose Claude Pro when you live in long documents, want Artifacts and Projects, and like that Claude Code is included. Usage limits are the trade-off heavy users report hitting on Pro; Max exists for that, at $100 or $200.
  • Choose Google AI Pro when the storage and the Gmail/Docs integration are worth as much as the model. Five terabytes of storage is part of the plan, which changes the math if you already pay Google for storage.

Do not buy all three. If you are deciding how many subscriptions to keep, use which AI subscription is worth paying for.

What the free plans are actually for

Free ChatGPT is the most capable zero-dollar assistant in this set for open-ended chat, because OpenAI includes unlimited GPT-6 text chats. The limits show up on tools: uploads, images, voice, deep research, and Codex.

Free Claude is a real writing and analysis tool: web search, file creation, code execution, memory, and Artifacts are on the free plan, with usage limits. It is a weak choice if you need image or video generation.

Free Gemini is the right free plan if you already have a Google account and want image editing plus the assistant. Video generation starts on Google AI Plus, not Free.

DeepSeek is a separate free chat app with a very low API price. It is a budget option, not a substitute for the feature sets above. Grok has a free tier and a paid Plus plan at $8/month through The X Subscription, which also covers Cursor.

How to choose in one afternoon

  1. Write down the three tasks you will actually repeat next week.
  2. Run each task in the free tier of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Paste the same source document.
  3. Check one factual claim in each answer against a primary source. If you skip this, you are grading style, not accuracy.
  4. Note which app you had to correct least, and which one already sits inside your email and docs.
  5. Subscribe to that one plan for a month. Cancel if you do not open it on workdays.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini better in 2026?

None of the three is better at every job. ChatGPT is the broadest consumer toolkit. Claude is the stronger default for long-form writing and document analysis. Gemini is the stronger default inside Google’s apps, and it is the one of the three with a full video-generation path on paid plans.

Can I use only the free plans?

Yes, for light use. You will hit tool limits: ChatGPT limits advanced tools, Claude limits how much you can do in a session, and Gemini’s free model is Flash-Lite rather than Gemini 4 Argon. Pay when those limits block a task you do every week.

Do these assistants cite sources?

Perplexity cites sources on answers by design. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can browse and run deeper research modes, but a normal chat answer is not a bibliography. Treat unsourced numbers, quotes, and medical or legal claims as unverified.

Which plan includes a coding agent?

Codex is included with ChatGPT, with light access on Free and Go and expanded access on Plus and Pro. Claude Code is included with Claude Pro and Max. Gemini’s coding-agent limits rise on higher Google AI plans. A dedicated comparison is in Cursor vs Claude Code vs Codex.
