Which AI Subscription Is Worth Paying For? Every Plan from $8 to $200/month Compared

By Andrew · October 23, 2026

Pay for the subscription that removes a weekly bottleneck or replaces a bill you already pay. Do not pay for a second assistant that does the same job. In 2026 the useful bands are simple: under $10 to try a paid tier, about $20 for a daily professional tool, and $100–$200 only if you already hit the limits of a $20 plan every week.

Prices below are US list prices from vendor pricing pages, last verified October 16, 2026. “Worth it” here means the documented features match a repeated job. It is not a performance score. We did not benchmark models against each other.

The rule, before the price table

A subscription is worth paying for when all three are true:

  1. You already do the job every week (writing, research, coding, meetings, video, or search).
  2. The free tier blocks that job, or the paid plan replaces something else you pay for (cloud storage, a coding tool, an Office suite).
  3. You can name the plan you would cancel if this one works.

If you cannot name the job, stay on free. ChatGPT Free, Claude Free, Gemini Free, Grok Free, Perplexity Free, Microsoft Copilot Free, and DeepSeek chat are all usable without a card.

Figure (price-band diagram, not a product screenshot). Alt: Three bands. Under $10: ChatGPT Go, Grok Plus, Google AI Plus, Poe. Around $20: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, Microsoft 365 Premium, GitHub Copilot Pro, Cursor Premium. $100 to $200: Claude Max, ChatGPT Pro, Google AI Ultra, Grok Ultra, Perplexity Max. Buy from the $20 band first.

Every mainstream plan from about $5 to $200

DeepSeek does not need a subscription for chat. Its API is billed per million tokens (for deepseek-flash, an off-peak cache miss is $0.15 per 1M input tokens and output is $0.60, as of the September 10, 2026 price sheet). That is a developer bill, not a consumer plan.

What is worth paying for, by person

Students and light users

Stay free until a cap stops a real assignment. If you pay, the smallest useful upgrades are Google AI Plus ($4.99), ChatGPT Go ($8), or Poe from $4.99. Skip $100+ tiers. For writing-specific tools, see best AI writing assistants for students and professionals.

One professional, one bill

Buy one plan near $20:

  • ChatGPT Plus if you want the widest toolkit.
  • Claude Pro if writing quality and long files are the work.
  • Google AI Pro if you want the model and 5 TB of storage.
  • Microsoft 365 Premium if you live in Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • GitHub Copilot Pro ($10) if the only job is code and you already use GitHub. It is cheaper than a general assistant and worse at everything else.

The head-to-head for the big three assistants is ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude.

Heavy daily users

Move from $20 to $100–$200 only after you can point to lost work, not curiosity. Claude Max, ChatGPT Pro, Google AI Ultra, the X Subscription Super or Ultra, Perplexity Max, and GitHub Copilot Max are capacity plans. They do not unlock a different job.

Teams

Per-seat prices add up faster than the model does. ChatGPT Business is $20/user/month on annual billing for two or more users. Microsoft 365 Copilot Business starts at $18/user/month on yearly billing at the promotional price we saw. GitHub Copilot Business is $19/user/month. X Subscription team seats are $30, $100, or $200. Buy the seat for people who will use it weekly, not for the whole company on day one.

A simple score for “worth paying”

This is a buying checklist, scored 0 or 1 by you. It is not our test result.

Question01
I do this job at least three days a weekNoYes
The free tier blocked me in the last 14 daysNoYes
This plan replaces another bill (storage, Office, a coder tool, a research tool)NoYes
I will cancel a different subscription if I keep this oneNoYes
I know which cheaper plan I would drop to if limits are fineNoYes

4–5: pay. 2–3: use the monthly plan, not the annual plan, for one cycle. 0–1: stay free.

Bundles that change the math

Some plans are worth it because of what is attached:

  • Google AI Pro ($19.99) includes 5 TB of storage. If you already pay for Google storage, subtract that from the AI price in your own budget.
  • The X Subscription is one pool for Grok and Cursor. Plus at $8 is cheap if you use both lightly. It is a poor deal if you use neither X nor Cursor. Switching off a legacy Cursor plan is permanent, per Cursor’s help center.
  • Claude Pro includes Claude Code. You may not need a separate coding subscription.
  • ChatGPT Plus includes expanded Codex. Same logic.
  • Microsoft 365 Personal or Premium includes the Office apps. Judge it as software plus AI, not as a chatbot alone.

What is usually not worth it

  • A second general assistant at $20 when you already pay for one.
  • Any $100–$200 tier in the first month.
  • ChatGPT Go if ads bother you and $12 more gets you Plus without that caveat. OpenAI says Go may include ads; Business does not train on business data by default.
  • Perplexity Max ($167/month annual) or Enterprise Max ($325/user/month) for occasional search. Pro is the plan to test first.
  • Family plans bought “for the AI” when the vendor limits AI to the owner. Microsoft says that about Microsoft 365 Family.

FAQ

What is the best AI subscription under $10?

Google AI Plus at $4.99, ChatGPT Go at $8, and X Subscription Plus at $8 are the confirmed sub-$10 plans with a clear feature step up from free. Poe’s entry price starts at $4.99, but we did not confirm the higher Poe tiers.

Is ChatGPT Plus still the default $20 plan?

It is the default if you want one app for chat, images, voice, and coding. Claude Pro and Google AI Pro are the better default when writing or Google’s apps dominate your day. Compare them directly in ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude.

Should I pay annually?

Only after a month of real use. Annual prices are lower on Claude Pro, Grok and Cursor, and several specialist tools, but you are locked in. Monthly is the right first invoice.
