What “ranking in ChatGPT” means

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google’s AI Overviews do not publish a keyword rank tracker the way Google Search Console does. Vendors now sell AI visibility or GEO (generative engine optimization): you pick prompts, they record whether your brand is mentioned or cited, and they suggest pages to create or fix.

That measurement is useful. It is not a leaderboard you can buy your way up with a plugin. From what these products actually implement, the work is:

1. Be the page that answers a specific question. A comparison with prices, dates, and named entities is easier to quote than a vague intro. This article is an example of the shape, not a guarantee anyone will cite it.
