Gamma vs Canva for Presentations: Which AI Slide Maker Wins?

By Andrew · October 24, 2026

Gamma wins when the job is “turn this outline into a deck I can send as a link.” Canva wins when the deck is one file in a pile of posts, docs, and video the same person already designs. Neither wins when the file must stay a native PowerPoint or Google Slides document. That job is Plus AI.

Prices are US list prices from Gamma and Canva’s pricing pages as checked October 16, 2026. We did not score which templates look better. The fit table records format, credits, and price.

The four-tool version of this question, including credit math for Plus AI and Pitch, is best AI presentation makers. If the subscription you are really choosing is Office versus a slide app, start with which AI subscription is worth paying for.

Gamma

Gamma generates a deck, a document, or a one-page site from a prompt. The default way to share it is a Gamma link.

Plus$9/seat/month ($108/year)1,000
Pro$18/seat/month ($216/year)4,000. Advanced models and API access
Ultra$90/seat/month, monthly billing only20,000

Gamma’s own approximate costs: about 1–3 credits to generate a card, and images from a small number of credits on standard models up to roughly 30–125 on ultra models. A 10-card deck is a small share of Plus’s 1,000 credits unless you regenerate images on the expensive models. Free is enough to learn the editor. It is a weak plan for a weekly meeting because the balance does not refill by itself.

Choose Gamma for internal updates, workshop drafts, a seller presentation, or any deck that can live at a URL. Leave Gamma when the client will drop the file onto a company PowerPoint master and keep editing for a month. Export exists. Native editing still favors Plus AI.

Canva

Canva is a design suite. Presentations sit next to posts, docs, and video. Free includes a very large template library (Canva cites 1.6 million templates) and a limited AI allowance. Pro is $18/month or $180/year for one person, with a higher AI allowance (Canva describes it as 10× Free), background remover, and 100 GB. Business is $25/person/month or $250/person/year.

Magic Studio limits are fair-use limits, not a published “N slides per month” cap. Do not treat “10× Free” as a number of decks. Check the allowance inside the product if slide generation is the only feature you came for.

Choose Canva when the person making the deck also makes the social cut and the handout, and the brand kit should be the same. Leave Canva when you wanted a dedicated slide generator and you will never open the rest of the editor. Gamma Plus at $9 is the tighter bill for that person. A real-estate version of this split is in best AI tools for real estate agents.

Where people pick the wrong one

  • A board deck that must be a .pptx. Gamma’s web canvas and Canva’s design file both create a conversion step. Plus AI writes the native file. If you already have Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99/month, try Copilot in PowerPoint before you add either subscription.
  • A one-off you will not repeat. Gamma’s free balance covers a genuine test. Canva Free covers a genuine test. Beautiful.ai’s monthly price ($45) does not. Beautiful.ai Pro annual at $14.50 is for people who present constantly. There is a 14-day trial and a free year for students with a valid .edu email, and no ongoing free plan.
  • A diagram, not a story. That is Napkin AI, at 500 free credits a week or Plus at $9/person/month. It belongs beside a slide tool.
  • A shared room with guests and analytics. Pitch Free covers up to 5 members. It is a different product from both Gamma and Canva.

How to make either deck shorter

  1. Write six lines of argument before you generate. The tool will not find the point.
  2. Generate once. Delete half the slides. Length is cheap, so the draft is long.
  3. Replace every statistic the model introduced. If the deck depends on research, use a cited assistant and the method in ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude.
  4. Put real screenshots and your logo in yourself.
  5. If someone else must own the file in PowerPoint, rebuild the keepers there instead of emailing a link they cannot govern.
