Midjourney Alternatives (2026): Ideogram, Firefly, FLUX, and ChatGPT

By Andrew · October 24, 2026

Leave Midjourney when the requirement is not “a strong artistic default.” Readable words point to Ideogram. An Adobe commercial workflow points to Adobe Firefly. A single image with no subscription points to FLUX. A chat where you can say “change the hat” points to ChatGPT Images. Midjourney remains the artistic default, and it has no free plan.

Prices were last verified October 16, 2026. This page does not rank which picture looks better. It ranks the constraint Midjourney’s plan sheet fails.

Arrows leave toward Ideogram for text, Firefly for Adobe, FLUX for per-image billing, ChatGPT for conversation, Leonardo for custom models, and Canva or Krea when a free path matters more than a house style.

The shared prompting basics are in AI image generators for beginners. A first month inside Midjourney, if you are not leaving, is Midjourney for beginners.

Ideogram, for type

Ideogram is the alternative when a poster, logo concept, or thumbnail has to contain a real word. Free is 30 credits a week. Plus is 2,400 credits a month at $20, or $15/month if you pay $180 for the year, and it adds private generation. Pro is $60 monthly or $42/month yearly for 7,500 credits. Paid plans can keep generating in a slower queue after priority credits run out. Edits and upscales still spend credits. Monthly credits do not roll over.

Midjourney is the weaker tool for this job even on Mega. Spelling is the constraint, not Fast hours.

Firefly, for a commercial Adobe stack

Adobe Firefly Standard is $9.99/month and 2,000 credits. Pro is $19.99 and 4,000 credits and includes Express Premium plus Photoshop on the web and mobile. Pro Plus is $49.99 (10,000 credits). Premium is $199.99 (50,000). Adobe’s own models are positioned for commercial work inside Adobe’s apps. Paid plans include unlimited standard image and vector generations. Credits are spent on premium features such as video, audio, and partner models.

Adobe’s examples: Firefly Image 5 costs 10 credits a generation. Video is 20 credits per second at 540p, 50 at 720p, and 100 at 1080p. A 2,000-credit Standard plan is about 200 of those image generations. It is not 200 seconds of 1080p video. Credits do not roll over.

Choose Firefly when the art director already lives in Photoshop or Express. Choose Midjourney when the look is the point and Adobe’s license language is not.

FLUX, when a subscription is the problem

FLUX, from Black Forest Labs, is pay as you go. One credit is $0.01. FLUX 3 Klein images run from $0.008 at 768×768 to $0.036 at 4K. The same prices apply in the API and the playground. Open weights exist for teams that will run models themselves. There is no seat fee.

FLUX is the right bill for occasional images and for developers. It is a clumsy teacher if you wanted moodboards, Stealth, and a community style reference. Those are Midjourney features, described in the review. FLUX 3 also generates video with audio, priced per second. This guide does not quote a per-second rate, because the figure we are willing to print is the image card above.

Leonardo, ChatGPT, Canva, and Krea

Leonardo.Ai Essential is $12/month for 8,500 fast tokens. Premium is $30/month for 25,000 fast tokens and unlimited relaxed generation on select models. Ultimate is $60/month. It fits game art and personal models. The free plan is for casual use. We are not quoting a free-token count the plan sheet did not pin down in our check.

ChatGPT image generation is the alternative when the next instruction is a sentence (“make the background white”). Go is $8/month. Plus is $20. Pro from $100 is the high-limit tier. If images are only one reason you would pay $20, the assistant decision is ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude and the tier decision is ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro.

Canva is the alternative when the image is one object on a slide or a social post. Krea is the alternative when you want a daily free allowance across models and you do not want Midjourney’s public gallery on Basic.

FAQ

What is the best free Midjourney alternative?

There is no free Midjourney. For a free start, Ideogram gives 30 credits a week, Krea gives 100 compute units a day, and ChatGPT’s free tier can create a limited number of images. “Best” depends on whether you need text, a design editor, or a chat. We did not score image quality.

Is Ideogram cheaper than Midjourney?

Ideogram Plus is $15/month on yearly billing, or $20 monthly. Midjourney Basic is $8/month on yearly billing, or $10 monthly, and Standard is $24 or $30. The cheaper plan is the one whose meter matches the job. Ideogram is the one to buy for text, even if Basic costs less.

Can I use FLUX instead of a Midjourney subscription?

Yes, if you are willing to pay per image and you do not need Midjourney’s Relax queue, Stealth, or style-reference workflow. A handful of 768×768 Klein images is a fraction of a $10 Basic month. A week of exploration is not.
