AI Image Generators: A Beginner's Guide (2026)

By Andrew · October 13, 2026

Learn prompting in a tool you already have, then pay for a specialist only when a specific limit shows up. Canva Free or ChatGPT Images is enough for a first week. Move to Ideogram when the image must contain readable words. Move to Midjourney when you want a stronger artistic default. Use Adobe Firefly when you need Adobe’s credit system and apps. Use FLUX when you would rather pay per image than per month.

Prices were last verified October 16, 2026. This guide does not rank image quality with a score. Taste is not a fact we measured. The recommendations follow published prices, free tiers, and what each product is built to do (text in images, Adobe licensing, pay as you go).

What an AI image generator does

You describe a picture. A model returns pixels. The same words produce different pictures on different tools, and a second run on the same tool will not match the first. Treat the output as a draft you accept, edit, or rerun.

You are not photographing a real scene, and you should not present a generated picture of a product screen as if it were the product. If you need a diagram of a process, a slide tool or a chart is more honest. See presentation makers for that job, and video generators if the asset has to move.

A prompt formula that is enough to start

Use five parts, in this order:

subject + setting + style + light + composition

Example: “a red fox reading a paperback in a small library, watercolor illustration, warm lamp light, wide shot, no text.”

Add the things models often get wrong, as negatives or plain constraints: “no text,” “two people, not three,” “hands not visible,” “square crop.” If words must appear in the image, say the exact string in quotes and use a tool that is sold for text rendering. That is Ideogram’s niche, not a prompt trick that works everywhere.

Iterate in this order, one change at a time:

  1. Subject and count (“one fox”).
  2. Medium (“watercolor,” “product photo,” “pencil sketch”).
  3. Light and lens (“overcast daylight,” “35mm”).
  4. Crop and background.
  5. Only then, a reference image, if the tool supports one.

Figure (prompt diagram, not a generated sample presented as official UI). Alt: A prompt split into five labeled parts: subject, setting, style, light, and composition. A second line lists constraints: exact text if any, what to exclude, and aspect ratio. The figure is a teaching diagram, not a screenshot of Midjourney, ChatGPT, or Ideogram.

Beginner plans, in more detail

ChatGPT Images

Image creation sits inside ChatGPT. Free can create a limited number of images. Go ($8) raises that. Plus ($20) is the plan OpenAI positions for more complex image work, alongside the rest of ChatGPT. Pro, from $100/month, is the high-limit tier. The API is separate: GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst is listed at $8 per 1M image input tokens and $30 per 1M image output tokens, with batch at half price.

Use ChatGPT while you are still learning prompts, because you can say “crop tighter” in the next message. Switch away when you need typography, a specific artistic community, or Adobe’s stack. The assistant decision, if images are only part of why you would pay $20, is in ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude.

Ideogram

Ideogram is the beginner upgrade for text. Free is 30 credits a week, which is enough to learn and not enough to run a shop. Plus is 2,400 credits a month at $20, or $15/month if you pay $180 for the year. Pro is $60 monthly or $42/month yearly (7,500 credits). Team is $30/user monthly or $20/user yearly, with a two-user minimum.

Midjourney

Midjourney Basic is $10/month or $96/year and includes 3.3 hours of Fast GPU time. Standard is $30/month or $24/month annual, with 15 Fast hours and unlimited Relax images. Pro ($60 / $48 annual) and Mega ($120 / $96 annual) add more Fast time, and Pro adds Stealth. Extra Fast time is $4/hour on every plan. There is no free plan in the comparison we verified.

Midjourney’s help center notes that in the V8 alpha, some settings (including --hd, --q 4, style references, and moodboards) run slower, and Relax mode is not available on that alpha yet. Beginners should ignore those flags until a Basic plan feels small.

Adobe Firefly

Adobe Firefly Standard is $9.99/month and 2,000 credits. Pro is $19.99 and 4,000 credits and includes Express Premium plus Photoshop on the web and mobile. Pro Plus is $49.99 (10,000 credits). Premium is $199.99 (50,000). Adobe’s rate card examples: Firefly Image 5 costs 10 credits a generation; video is 20 credits per second at 540p, 50 at 720p, and 100 at 1080p. A 2,000-credit Standard plan is about 200 of those image generations, not 200 video seconds.

Choose Firefly when the picture has to sit in an Adobe workflow and you want Adobe’s published credit accounting. It is a clumsy first teacher if you do not already use Adobe.

FLUX, Leonardo, and Krea

FLUX is pay as you go on Black Forest Labs’ API and playground. FLUX 3 Klein is $0.008 at 768×768, $0.009 at 1K, $0.014 at 2K, and $0.036 at 4K. Other FLUX models cost more; the default in BFL’s public calculator was $0.048 per image at the time of the check. Video is billed per second. This is the right first paid option if you hate subscriptions and you are fine working in a playground or via API.

Leonardo.Ai Essential is $12/month for 8,500 fast tokens. Premium is $30 and adds unlimited relaxed images on selected models. It fits people making lots of variations, including game and concept art, more than it fits someone who needs one social post.

Krea Free gives 100 compute units a day with no card. Paid plans add a commercial license. Basic is $9/month or $5/month yearly for 5,000 units. Use the free daily allowance to compare models before you subscribe anywhere else.

Do not buy Midjourney Mega, Firefly Premium, or ChatGPT Pro to learn. Those tiers are capacity. The subscription logic is the same as in which AI plan is worth paying for.

Rights, in plain language

  • Read the license for the plan you are on. Free tiers and paid tiers often differ on commercial use. Krea’s commercial license is on paid plans. ChatGPT’s image rights follow OpenAI’s terms for your plan.
  • Do not upload a person’s photo into a generator to impersonate them.
  • Do not ask a tool to reproduce a living artist’s style and then claim that artist made it.
  • Keep the prompt next to the file if a client or a platform may ask how it was made.

FAQ

What is the easiest AI image generator for a beginner?

ChatGPT Images or Canva, because you can start from an account you may already have and correct the image in conversation or in an editor. Ideogram is the next step when the picture includes words. Midjourney is the next step when you care more about the overall look and will accept a paid plan with no free tier.

How do I get text to render correctly?

Put the exact words in quotes, keep the string short, and use Ideogram rather than hoping a general generator spells. If the words are a headline on a poster, it is often faster to generate the picture with no text and typeset the words in Canva.

Is there a good free option?

Yes. ChatGPT Free (limited), Ideogram’s 30 weekly credits, Krea’s 100 daily units, Canva Free, and Firefly’s limited daily generations. Midjourney and FLUX’s pay-as-you-go path are not free. FLUX is cheap per image, which is different.
