Perplexity Review (2026): How to Use It as a Research Desk

By Andrew · October 24, 2026

Perplexity is an answer engine that searches, writes a short answer, and attaches citations you are supposed to open. That habit is the product. Pro at $17/month billed annually adds higher limits, model choice, files, and Perplexity Computer. The question of whether those extras are worth $17 is a different article: is Perplexity Pro worth it. This one is how to use the desk you already have.

Annual prices and the help-center limits below were read October 24, 2026 for that companion piece. We did not score answer accuracy against ChatGPT or Gemini. A citation is a link. It is not a fact until you open it.

The workflow, before the upgrade

Use this order on the free plan. Do not start by buying Pro.

  1. Ask one question a person could look up. Name the kind of source you want: a company’s pricing page, a regulator, a paper, a date range.
  2. Read the answer once for shape, not for numbers.
  3. Open every citation attached to a number, a name, or a date. If a number has no citation, delete it from your notes.
  4. Ask a follow-up in the same thread when the first answer missed a constraint. A new thread throws away the correction.
  5. Stop when you have the links. Perplexity is a way to assemble a reading list with a draft on top. It is not the filing.

Figure (research diagram, not a product screenshot). Alt: A question goes to Perplexity and comes back as a paragraph plus links. The person opens the links and keeps a note. A second path sends peer-reviewed questions to Consensus or Elicit. A third path sends drafting to Claude or ChatGPT. Computer, on Pro, is a later step for tasks, not the first search.

Where a $20 assistant fits instead is ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude. Where $17 sits among other bills is which AI subscription is worth paying for.

What to use each surface for

Basic search is the everyday desk. The help-center comparison lists practically unlimited basic searches on Free, with citations. Pro Search is the heavier mode: 3 a day on Free, and a weekly allowance described as average use on Pro. Research queries are rarer still: 1 a month on Free. Spend Pro Search on the question you will quote. Spend basic search on the tour.

Spaces keep a project’s threads together. Use one Space per client, course, or article. Do not keep a year of unrelated questions in one thread and hope the model remembers.

Files matter when the source is a PDF you already trust. Pro adds higher upload limits. For a class PDF that should not be mixed with the open web, Gemini Notebook stays on your uploads. The study workflow is how to study with Gemini Notebook. Perplexity is the worse tool when the whole point is “only these documents.”

Model choice and Model Council, on Pro and Max, let you pick a model or compare answers. Use that on a question you are about to repeat in public. Do not use it on a lunch recommendation. Model names on the site change. Buy the right to choose, not a model string from a screenshot.

Premium data such as PitchBook and Statista is a Pro reason for market questions. It does not cover a number you failed to click.

Comet is Perplexity’s browser, with an assistant on paid plans. It is optional. You can do the citation workflow in the ordinary app.

Perplexity Computer is the agent that performs tasks rather than only answering. It is the feature that makes Pro feel larger than search, and the feature that makes Max ($167/month billed annually) a capacity plan. If you will not hand over a task, do not buy Max, and read the worth-it article before you buy Pro for Computer alone.

“Average use” is Perplexity’s phrase. It is not a number. Education Pro is $10/month with SheerID for students and educators. Enterprise Pro starts at $40/user/month or $400/year per seat. Those plans are in the worth-it article, including a wording clash about whether Education Pro is unlimited. This review does not resolve it.

When to leave the desk

The question isUse
“What is on the public web, and where did that sentence come from?”Perplexity
“What does this PDF say, and nothing else?”Gemini Notebook
“What does the peer-reviewed literature say?”Consensus or Elicit
“Write the memo in my voice after I have the sources”Claude or ChatGPT
“Do the clicks for me”Perplexity Computer, on a paid plan, and then check the work
“Search my meeting notes”A notetaker. See best free AI note takers

A research afternoon that starts in Perplexity and ends in a slide deck should switch tools for the deck. Best AI presentation makers covers Gamma and the rest. Do not ask an answer engine to be the design tool.

FAQ

Is Perplexity a search engine or a chatbot?

It answers in prose, like a chatbot, and it attaches web sources, like a search tool. Use it when you want both. Use Claude or ChatGPT when you want a draft and you already have the sources. Use Consensus or Elicit when the sources must be papers.

Do I need Pro to do research?

No. Free includes cited basic search, 3 Pro Searches a day, and 1 research query a month. Pro is for higher limits, files, model choice, premium data, and Computer. The upgrade math is in the companion article.

Are Perplexity’s citations reliable?

They are links. Some are relevant and some are not. Open the page, and do not repeat a figure you did not see there. This review does not claim an accuracy rate.
