⚡ Quick verdict

Claude Code is one of the strongest AI coding agents available. It works where developers already work, explains unfamiliar codebases, and can take on multi-step work like bug fixes, tests and migrations while you review. Pro is enough to try it on small projects; serious daily use in large codebases usually needs Max or a team plan.

Key takeaways

  • Included in Claude Pro ($17/mo billed annually or $20 monthly) and Max ($100 or $200 per month).
  • Max plans include $100 or $200 per month in API credits.
  • Runs in the terminal, IDEs, desktop app, web and Slack.
  • Auto mode is now the default on Pro, Max and Team, letting it work longer while catching risky commands.
  • Self-hosted environments (public beta) run sessions inside your own network.

What Claude Code is

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool. Instead of autocompleting a line at a time, it takes a task (“find and fix the double-charge bug in checkout,” “add a dark mode toggle that remembers the user’s choice”) and works through it: reading the relevant files, reproducing the problem, proposing a plan, editing code, running commands and tests, and reporting back. Anthropic’s tagline is to hand Claude “a bug fix, test, or multi-day migration” and steer and review from your terminal, IDE, Slack or the web.

It’s powered by Anthropic’s Claude models and shares a subscription with the Claude chat app (see our Claude review).

Key features

Understands your codebase

Ask “I’m new to this codebase, can you explain it?” and Claude Code maps the structure, main components and architecture before you touch anything.

Plans, edits and verifies

It builds a plan, asks clarifying questions, edits multiple files, runs your test suite and handles work that can run for hours or days.

Auto mode

Now on by default for Pro, Max and Team, auto mode lets it keep working without constant approvals while still catching risky commands.

Projects and parallel agents

On Claude Code Desktop, Projects group related sessions so you can run and supervise several agents at once.

Self-hosted environments (public beta)

Run sessions on your own infrastructure, next to internal services.

Artifacts

Preview in-progress work as a live, interactive artifact and share it with your team.

Best use cases

  • Bug fixes: reproduce a race condition, trace the root cause and patch it with a test.
  • Test coverage: “write unit tests for the billing module and make them pass.”
  • Migrations: upgrade a framework version across dozens of files over several sessions.
  • Onboarding: have it explain an unfamiliar repository and draw the main data flow.
  • Team workflows: mention Claude in Slack to kick off a fix and review the pull request later.

How to get started

  1. Subscribe to Claude Pro or Max (or set up API billing).
  2. Install Claude Code by following the developer docs, or open the desktop app or web version.
  3. Run it from your project’s root folder and sign in.
  4. Start by asking it to explain the codebase.
  5. Give a small, well-scoped task and review the diff.
  6. Add a project instructions file with conventions, test commands and things to avoid.

Tips and tricks

  • Scope tasks clearly with expected behavior and acceptance criteria.
  • Tell it how to verify: the exact test or build command to run.
  • Review every diff before merging, especially for security-sensitive code.
  • Use version control and work on branches so changes are easy to roll back.

Example task prompt:

In the checkout service, customers are double-charged when they double-click Pay. Reproduce it with a test, find the root cause, fix it so each checkout session uses one idempotency key, disable the button during the request, and run the full test suite.

Pros and cons

👍 Pros

  • Works in terminal, IDE, desktop, web and Slack
  • Strong at reading and explaining large codebases
  • Can run long, multi-step tasks
  • Included in the same subscription as the Claude chat app
  • Self-hosted option for teams with strict network rules

👎 Cons

  • Usage limits on Pro suit only short sprints
  • Heavy use pushes you to Max ($100–$200)
  • Agentic changes still need careful code review
  • Terminal-first workflow has a learning curve for some

Who should (and shouldn't) use Claude Code

✅ A good fit if you…

  • Write code daily and want an agent to handle well-defined tasks
  • Join new codebases and need fast explanations
  • Run engineering teams that want agents in Slack and CI

⛔ Look elsewhere if you…

  • Are a non-developer wanting to build apps by chat only (consider Lovable or Bolt.new)
  • Need a free coding assistant
  • Can't allow an agent to run commands in your environment
