Best AI Video Generators in 2026 (Sora Is Gone – Here's What to Use Instead)
By Andrew · October 22, 2026
Do not wait on Sora. In 2026 it is not the video product to build a workflow around. OpenAI’s consumer creative tools in our directory are ChatGPT image generation, not a current Sora plan. For new video work, use a generator that still publishes prices and credits: Runway or Kling AI for clips, Google Flow for Veo, and HeyGen or Synthesia for presenter videos.
We are not claiming a specific shutdown date or quoting an OpenAI announcement we did not archive. The practical fact is narrower: Sora is not an available, priced option in this guide. Everything below is a current vendor plan, last verified October 16, 2026. Fit labels describe what the product is sold to do. They are not quality scores from a shootout.
What to use instead, by job
| Job | Start with | Entry paid price |
|---|---|---|
| Short cinematic or marketing clips | Runway or Kling AI | Runway Standard $12/month billed annually; Kling Standard $6.99 first month, then $8.80/month |
| Google’s Veo models in a studio | Google Flow | Free 50 credits/day; Google AI Plus $4.99/month adds 200 credits |
| A person speaking to camera, without filming | HeyGen or Synthesia | Both list a $29/month creator/starter tier |
| Higher-volume clip generation | Luma AI or Pika | Luma Plus $30/month; Pika Starter $10/month |
| Edit and caption social video | CapCut | Pro $19.99/month or $179.99/year |
| Prompt-to-full-video for marketers | invideo AI | Starter $10/seat/month billed annually, or $20 monthly |
| Turn a long video into short clips | Opus Clip | Pro $14.50/month billed annually ($174/year) or $29 monthly |
| Edit talking video by editing the transcript | Descript | Hobbyist $16/person/month billed annually |
Figure (workflow diagram, not a product screenshot). Alt: Four paths replacing Sora. Generate a clip in Runway, Kling, Pika, Luma, or Google Flow. Generate a presenter in HeyGen or Synthesia. Edit and caption in CapCut or Descript. Cut highlights in Opus Clip. Do not treat any path as a finished film without a human edit.
The full set is in the video tools directory.
Clip generators
These tools make new footage from a prompt, an image, or both. Credit systems differ, so a lower subscription can still cost more per finished clip. Compare credits only after you know how many credits one clip uses on that plan.
Runway
Runway is the pro-oriented studio. Free includes 125 one-time credits. Standard is $12/month billed annually ($15 monthly) with 625 credits. Pro is $28/month annual ($35 monthly) with 2,250 credits, voice clone, and 4K upscaling. Max is $76/month annual ($95 monthly) with 9,500 credits. Yearly billing is two months free at the rates Runway published (Standard saves $36/year).
Choose Runway when a filmmaker or agency wants model choice and an editing environment, not a single “make me a video” button.
Kling AI
Kling AI is the lower-priced membership. Basic is free and includes no monthly credits. Standard is $6.99 the first month, then $8.80/month, with 660 credits — Kling’s own guide equates that to about 33 videos at 720p, or 660 images. Pro renews at $32.56/month (3,000 credits). First-month prices are introductory. Confirm the renewal before you subscribe.
Choose Kling when you want many short clips and can work inside a credit cap.
Google Flow
Google Flow is Google’s studio for Veo. Everyone gets 50 Flow credits a day. Google AI Plus ($4.99/month) adds 200 credits a month. Google AI Pro ($19.99) adds 1,000. Ultra adds 10,000 or 25,000 depending on the tier.
Google’s published credit costs include Veo 3.1 Lite at 10 credits (0 for Ultra), Veo 3.1 Fast at 20 for non-Ultra subscribers, and Veo 3.1 Quality at 100 credits for 8 seconds. A free account can make short Lite clips daily. A Pro account is the realistic plan for repeated Quality generations.
If you already pay for Gemini, read which AI subscription is worth paying for before you add a second video subscription.
Luma and Pika
Luma AI Plus is $30/month or $300/year for 10,000 credits and commercial use. There is no free tier on the price table we verified. Pika is cheaper to start: a free plan that uses credit packs, Starter at $10/month for 900 credits, and Creator at $35/month for 3,150 credits. Pika’s commercial license starts on Creator, not Starter. The pricing page also showed discounts at check time; pay the price at checkout, not a sale banner.
Presenter and training video
HeyGen and Synthesia solve a different problem: a person (or an avatar) delivers a script. Use them for explainers, enablement, and localized training. Do not use them when you need original cinematography.
| HeyGen | Synthesia | |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 3 videos/month, up to 1 minute, Avatar IV | 10 minutes and 500 credits/month, watermarked |
| Entry paid | Creator $29/month, 600 credits, 1080p, voice cloning, no watermark | Starter $29/month monthly, or a yearly price shown at $19/month, 1,250 credits, downloads, no logo |
| Next tier | Pro $49/month, 1,000 credits, 4K | Pro from $89/month monthly, 6,000 credits |
| Best documented fit | Marketers and creators who want a presenter | L&D and HR teams; Enterprise lists 140+ language translation and SCORM |
HeyGen Business is $149/month. Synthesia charges about 100 credits per video minute. A Starter plan’s 1,250 credits is on the order of a dozen minutes before add-ons, not an unlimited library.
Voice quality is half of this workflow. Pair either tool with a voice generator when the stock voices are not enough, using ElevenLabs and the alternatives compared here.
Editors, not generators
CapCut Pro is $19.99/month or $179.99/year for premium templates and a monthly AI credit allotment. CapCut warns that the price you see can change after sign-in and by platform; desktop can cost more than mobile. Treat $19.99 as the US reference price, then confirm in the app.
invideo AI sells credits per seat: Starter $20/month or $10/month billed annually (400 credits), Plus $60 or $30 annual (2,000), Max $150 or $75 annual (5,000). Invideo’s own examples put Starter near 15 fast Seedance 2 videos or about 160 images. We did not confirm a permanent free plan.
Opus Clip is for repurposing, not generation. Free gives 60 credits a month and clips that expire from export after 3 days. Pro is the practical plan at $29/month or $14.50/month billed annually, with 300 credits and a two-month rollover.
Descript is the editor for footage you already recorded. The free plan includes 60 media minutes. Hobbyist is $16/person/month annual.
How to pick without a fake “best overall”
| Need | Strong public fit | Weak fit |
|---|---|---|
| One beautiful 5–10 second shot | Runway, Kling, Luma, Pika, Google Flow | HeyGen, Synthesia, Opus Clip |
| A founder or trainer on screen | HeyGen, Synthesia | Runway as the only tool |
| Google ecosystem, already paying for Gemini | Google Flow | A second $30 subscription on day one |
| Commercial license on the cheapest paid tier | Check each plan; Pika puts it on Creator ($35), Luma Plus includes it ($30), ElevenLabs-style voice tools often gate it too | Assuming free output is licensed |
| Cut a podcast or webinar into clips | Opus Clip, Descript, CapCut | A text-to-video model |
Read the license on the plan you buy. Free tiers often allow generation and block commercial use, watermarks, or downloads. That is a contract term, not a quality opinion.
A practical first week
- Write a 20-word prompt and a 60-word script for the same idea.
- Spend free credits only: Google Flow’s daily credits, Runway’s 125, Kling’s free Basic (no monthly video credits — so this step may be zero clips), HeyGen’s 3 videos, Pika’s free plan.
- Keep the tool that produced a usable shot in fewer retries. Retry count is your data. We do not have a universal one.
- Subscribe monthly to that tool. Add CapCut or Descript only when you are assembling, not generating.
- Disclose AI footage where the platform or your audience expects it.
If the video is a narrated slideshow, you may not need a video model at all. Gamma and the other presentation tools plus a voiceover from ElevenLabs is often cheaper.
FAQ
What replaced Sora?
Nothing is a drop-in Sora replacement with the same name and plan. For generated clips, the priced options to evaluate are Runway, Kling, Google Flow, Luma, and Pika. For avatar presenters, evaluate HeyGen and Synthesia.
What is the cheapest paid AI video plan?
Among confirmed prices: Google AI Plus at $4.99/month (adds Flow credits), Kling Standard at $8.80/month after the first month, Pika Starter at $10/month, invideo Starter at $10/seat on annual billing, and Runway Standard at $12/month on annual billing. Cheapest is not the same as enough credits for your script.
Can I use these clips commercially?
Sometimes, on specific paid tiers. Luma Plus includes commercial use. Pika’s commercial license starts on Creator. HeyGen’s free videos are limited and Creator removes the watermark. Read the current license on the plan before you publish ads or client work.
