Descript Review (2026): Edit the Transcript, Then Export

By Andrew · October 24, 2026

Descript is a video and podcast editor that cuts footage by cutting the transcript. Delete a sentence and that moment leaves the timeline. Free includes 60 media minutes a month. Hobbyist at $16/person/month billed annually is the first plan with watermark-free 1080p, 10 media hours, and 400 AI credits. Creator at $24/person/month annual is the plan that adds 4K and full Underlord access.

Prices are from Descript’s pricing page, checked October 16, 2026. Annual billing saves up to 35% versus the monthly rates in the table. We did not time a real edit against a traditional editor, and we do not score “how human it sounds.”

Media hours are the imported or recorded media Descript processes per editor per month. AI credits are a second meter, spent on AI tools. A long raw file can burn hours before you have made a single cut. Trim the recording you import, or record shorter.

Figure (edit diagram, not a product screenshot). Alt: A recording becomes a transcript. Deleting words deletes the matching picture. Studio Sound and filler-word removal sit on that transcript. Underlord can propose a tighter cut. Export is a file. A side path sends the finished long video to OpusClip for shorts, or starts in CapCut if the edit was never a talking-head transcript.

What the editor actually is

The core loop is text. Descript transcribes the recording, including a screen recording or a remote session from its Rooms feature. You edit the words. A timeline is still there when the cut needs a frame. That is the product. The AI features sit on top:

  • Studio Sound cleans noisy voices.
  • Remove Filler Words and Remove Retakes are the bulk edits on a rambling take.
  • Underlord is the co-editor. You can ask it to tighten a cut, add captions, or make clips. Hobbyist has access. Creator and above have full access. “Full” is Descript’s word for the higher tier. It is not a claim that the cut is finished without you.
  • Create Clips, captions, Eye Contact, Green Screen, and multicam are the picture tools.
  • AI speech and voice clones exist inside the editor. If you have no recording and you want a synthetic narrator, ElevenLabs is the tool built for that. See ElevenLabs review.
  • Translation and dubbing in 30+ languages is a Business feature, with proofreading. Transcription in 25 languages is on all plans.

Descript says it is used by a large base of creators and names teams at well-known companies. That is a marketing claim, not a result we reproduced.

A first episode, on the plan that matches it

  1. Start on Free. Import a recording under 60 minutes or you will spend the month on one file.
  2. Fix the transcript where names are wrong. Cuts follow the words. A bad transcript becomes a bad edit.
  3. Delete the sentences you would not air. Then run filler-word removal if your plan includes it.
  4. Run Studio Sound on the voice track if the room was bad. Listen once at normal speed before you trust it.
  5. Export. If the file is watermarked or stuck at a resolution you cannot publish, that is the Hobbyist or Creator upgrade, not a prompt problem.
  6. If you also need ten vertical clips, decide whether Create Clips inside Descript is enough or whether the long file should go to OpusClip. The clipping product is OpusClip review.

Hobbyist is the hobby-podcast plan: 10 hours and a clean 1080p export. Creator is the regular YouTube plan: 30 hours, 4K, and the fuller Underlord set. Business is the plan when several editors need a brand system and translation. Do not buy Business for one host.

Descript is not the meeting bot, and it is not CapCut

A Zoom that needs a transcript and action items while the call is happening belongs in a notetaker. Start with how to transcribe a Zoom meeting free and best AI meeting notetakers. Bring the recording into Descript when the job changes from “notes” to “episode.”

CapCut is the short-form timeline editor, with templates and auto captions. Pro is $19.99/month or $179.99/year. Use CapCut when you are cutting to a beat on a phone. Use Descript when the source of truth is the spoken sentence. Generated footage, as opposed to an edit of a recording, is best AI video generators.

FAQ

Is Descript free?

Yes. Free is $0, with no card, and 60 media minutes a month. Watermark-free 1080p is Hobbyist, at $16/person/month on annual billing or $24 monthly.

What is Underlord?

Underlord is Descript’s AI co-editor. You tell it what the cut should do. Hobbyist includes access. Creator and above include what Descript calls full access. Review the cut. The transcript edit is still yours.

Does Descript replace OpusClip?

It can make clips from a project you are already editing. OpusClip is built to find shorts in a long video and publish them. Many channels use Descript for the episode and OpusClip for the verticals. You do not have to buy both on day one.
