HeyGen vs Synthesia (2026): Best AI Avatar Video Tool for Training and Marketing
By Andrew · October 24, 2026
Choose HeyGen for a solo marketer or trainer who wants a custom avatar, voice cloning, and 1080p without an enterprise contract. Choose Synthesia when the buyer is an L&D team that needs SCORM, brand kits, and translation at company scale. Both publish a free test and a paid tier at $29/month. The $29 plans are not the same product.
Prices are US list prices from each vendor’s pricing page as checked October 16, 2026. We did not run a blind comparison of avatar realism. The fit labels follow features the companies list: resolution, languages, credits, and learning-system export.
Side by side
| HeyGen | Synthesia | |
|---|---|---|
| Free test | 3 videos/month, up to 1 minute, Avatar IV, 1 custom video avatar, 30+ languages | Basic: 10 minutes of video or dubbing and 500 credits/month. Videos are watermarked |
| First paid plan | Creator $29/month: 600 credits, videos up to 30 minutes, 1080p, watermark removal, voice cloning, 175+ languages | Starter $29/month billed monthly, shown as $19/month on yearly billing: 1,250 credits, downloads, logo removal |
| Next individual or team step | Pro $49/month: 1,000 credits, 4K, faster processing | Pro $89/month billed monthly: 6,000 credits. Higher credit packs go up to 48,000 credits at $676/month |
| Training-department plan | Business $149/month: 1,500 credits, videos up to 60 minutes, SSO, SCORM, LMS integrations. Extra seats $20/month | Enterprise: custom credits, unlimited video minutes, 1-click translation into 140+ languages, SAML/SSO, Brand Kits, SCORM. Learner seats $29 per learner per month |
| How usage is counted | Credits. Long videos spend them | A shared credit pool. About 100 credits per minute of video and about 76 per minute of dubbing, after the first 10 minutes included on every plan |
| Stock avatars | 500+ on Free | 125+ on paid plans, 240+ on Enterprise |
| Best documented job | Marketing, localization, and a presenter you do not film | Training, onboarding, and enablement at team scale |
Figure (buyer diagram, not a product screenshot). Alt: Two buyers. A marketer with a script and a monthly clip count goes to HeyGen Creator or Pro. An L&D team that must drop a package into an LMS goes to HeyGen Business or Synthesia Enterprise, depending on whether SCORM is required on a self-serve plan or only on Enterprise. A third path, no avatar: Descript or CapCut for footage you already shot.
Other ways to make video, including clip generators, are in best AI video generators. A faceless channel that may not need an avatar at all is how to start a faceless YouTube channel with AI. Voice-only narration is best AI voice generators.
HeyGen, when the video is a marketing or training asset you ship yourself
HeyGen turns a script into a video of a stock avatar or a custom avatar built from a short clip or a reference image. Voice cloning starts on Creator. Free includes Avatar IV and one custom video avatar, capped at 3 videos a month and 1 minute each, in 30+ languages. That is enough to see whether an avatar belongs in the format. It is not a content calendar.
Creator at $29/month is the plan most solo users actually need: longer videos (up to 30 minutes), 1080p, no watermark, cloning, and 175+ languages and dialects, with 600 credits. Pro at $49 adds 4K and 1,000 credits. Business at $149 is where SSO, SCORM, LMS integrations, and interactive pieces such as quizzes show up, with videos up to 60 minutes and extra seats at $20/month. Yearly billing exists. Use the monthly price until the format sticks.
HeyGen is the better documented self-serve path for multilingual marketing (175+ languages on the paid plans, not only on Enterprise) and for a custom avatar on a $29 plan. It is also the path with a published Business price when a training team wants SCORM without a sales call.
Synthesia, when the system around the video matters
Synthesia is built for presenter-led training and internal communication. Basic is a real free allotment: 10 minutes and 500 credits a month, plus 3 survey responses, with a watermark. Starter removes the logo and adds downloads. The yearly price shown on the page was $19/month against $29 monthly. Pro at $89/month with 6,000 credits is the practical team tier if you are not ready for Enterprise. Yearly billing saves up to 3 months at the rates Synthesia published.
Credits are shared across features. Video is about 100 credits a minute and dubbing about 76 a minute, beyond the first 10 minutes included on every plan. Survey responses are 350 credits after the first 3. A 6-minute training module is on the order of 600 credits if you are past the included minutes, which is a small slice of Pro’s 6,000 and a large slice of Starter’s 1,250 if you also dub it. Estimate minutes before you pick the pack. The jump to 48,000 credits at $676/month is a volume plan, not a default.
1-click translation into 140+ languages, Brand Kits, SAML/SSO, unlimited video minutes, and SCORM export are Enterprise features on the page we checked. Personal avatars exist, and Enterprise includes them without a tight cap. Roleplays and surveys are part of the learning product, not a marketing afterthought. Learner seats are a separate $29 per learner per month.
Synthesia is the better fit when procurement, an LMS, and a brand team are in the room. It is an expensive fit when one person needs a 60-second ad and HeyGen Creator already covers 1080p and watermark removal.
Training versus marketing
| Situation | Lean toward | Reason on the pricing page |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly product or social clips, one creator | HeyGen Creator ($29) | 1080p, no watermark, voice cloning, 175+ languages, without Enterprise |
| You need 4K | HeyGen Pro ($49) | 4K is a listed Pro feature |
| A course that must enter an LMS this quarter, self-serve | HeyGen Business ($149) | SCORM and LMS integrations have a published price |
| A company standard: SSO, brand kit, translation, SCORM, unlimited minutes | Synthesia Enterprise | Those controls are listed together on Enterprise |
| You want to test with more than a one-minute clip | Synthesia Basic | 10 watermarked minutes, versus HeyGen Free’s 1-minute cap |
| You are editing footage of a real person | Neither | Descript or CapCut. Avatar tools replace the camera. They do not edit the camera you already used |
| You only need a voice | Neither | ElevenLabs Starter at $6/month includes a commercial license |
Interactive video (quizzes, links) is listed on HeyGen Business. Synthesia’s roleplays and surveys are the parallel idea, with a credit cost on surveys. If the “training” is a talking head plus a PDF, you do not need either interactive add-on.
What both tools still require from you
- A script that is true. The avatar will say the wrong price as confidently as the right one.
- Consent for a likeness. A custom or personal avatar is a person’s face. Have permission, especially for an employee who might leave.
- A disclosure when your platform or your audience requires one. Realism is the sales pitch. It is also how a viewer gets misled.
- A credit estimate. “Unlimited avatars” is not the same sentence as “unlimited minutes.” Synthesia’s unlimited minutes are an Enterprise line. HeyGen’s minute caps are plan caps (1, 30, or 60).
invideo AI is the alternative when you want a generated edit from a prompt and you do not need a consistent presenter. Starter is $10/seat/month on annual billing. It is a different category, noted here so a marketing team does not buy an avatar seat for a job a timeline tool does.
FAQ
Which is cheaper, HeyGen or Synthesia?
At the first paid tier, both list $29/month on monthly billing. Synthesia shows Starter at $19/month with yearly billing. HeyGen’s next step is Pro at $49. Synthesia’s next step is Pro at $89. HeyGen Business at $149 is a published training plan. Synthesia’s comparable controls are Enterprise and custom. Cheaper depends on whether you need those controls.
Which is better for translating training videos?
HeyGen puts 175+ languages on Creator and above. Synthesia puts 1-click translation into 140+ languages on Enterprise. For a solo creator, HeyGen’s language list arrives earlier in the price ladder. For a company that also wants SSO and SCORM in the same contract, Synthesia Enterprise is the bundle that lists them together.
Is the free plan enough?
Enough to judge the workflow. HeyGen Free is three one-minute videos. Synthesia Basic is 10 watermarked minutes and 500 credits. Neither is a production plan for a monthly series.
