How to Start a Faceless YouTube Channel with AI (Step-by-Step)
By Andrew · October 24, 2026
A faceless channel can be a real publishing business. A pile of near-identical AI videos is a monetization risk. Start with one topic you can explain better than a generic prompt, use AI for the slow parts (script draft, voice, captions, clip cutting), and keep a human pass on facts, pacing, and the first 15 seconds.
Prices below are US list prices. Voice, music, and editor prices were taken from vendor pricing pages on October 16, 2026. YouTube’s Partner Program rules were read from YouTube Help on October 24, 2026. Fit labels describe what each product is sold to do. They are not quality scores from a shootout.
The stack, in the order you will use it
| Step | Job | Start here | Pay when the free tier blocks you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Topic and script | Outline, draft, and fact list | ChatGPT or Claude | Plus or Pro only after free limits stop a weekly script |
| 2. Narration | A consistent voice you can monetize | ElevenLabs | Starter at $6/month. Free has no commercial license |
| 3. Picture | Edit, captions, and simple motion | CapCut | Pro is $19.99/month or $179.99/year |
| 4. Full draft from a prompt | A first cut when you do not want to edit a timeline | invideo AI | Starter is $10/seat/month billed annually, or $20 monthly |
| 5. Music | Beds and stingers you have rights to | Suno | Pro is $8/month on yearly billing ($11 monthly) for commercial rights |
| 6. Thumbnails | Type and stills | Canva | Free is enough for many thumbnails. Pro is $18/month or $180/year |
| 7. Shorts | Cut one long video into clips | Opus Clip | Free is 60 credits/month. Starter is $15/month |
| 8. A presenter, still faceless to the camera you own | Avatar video | HeyGen | Creator is $29/month. See HeyGen vs Synthesia |
Figure (production diagram, not a product screenshot). Alt: A line of six boxes. Research notes go into ChatGPT or Claude and come out as a script plus a source list. The script goes to ElevenLabs. The voice file goes to CapCut or invideo. Suno supplies music only on a plan with commercial rights. Opus Clip cuts Shorts from the finished long video. A human checks facts before upload.
Voice options in more depth are in best AI voice generators. Clip generators and avatar tools are in best AI video generators. Thumbnail stills that are generated rather than designed sit in the image-generator guide.
Step 1: Pick a series, not a niche adjective
“Faceless facts” is not a series. A series is a repeating container a viewer can recognize: one city, one tool category, one historical decade, one personal-finance calculation, one software tutorial with the same chapter structure.
Write the container in one sentence before you open a model. Example: “Eight-minute explainers of one spreadsheet function, with a worked file and a mistake to avoid.” That sentence is the brief you paste into ChatGPT or Claude. Ask for an outline, the claims that need a source, and a hook. Ask for the draft only after the outline is one you would actually say.
Keep a source note under every number. The model does not know this month’s price, law, or product screen. If you cannot point at a page for a claim, cut the claim.
Step 2: Read the monetization rules before you automate
YouTube’s channel monetization policies, read October 24, 2026, expect content that is original and made for viewers, and they reject content that is mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed the “repetitious content” policy to inauthentic content and said the update clarifies that mass-produced content was already ineligible. YouTube’s own follow-up said the guidelines apply regardless of how the content was made.
A separate reused content policy covers channels that republish footage from YouTube or elsewhere without significant original commentary, substantive edits, or educational or entertainment value. Permission from the original creator does not, by itself, make reused content eligible. A violation can affect monetization for the whole channel.
What that means for an AI workflow:
- One script template with swapped nouns is the pattern the inauthentic-content rule is aimed at.
- Stock clips with a new AI voice and no added explanation can fail the reused-content rule.
- A faceless channel that teaches, compares, or reports from sources you name is a normal format. The missing face is not the problem. The missing original work is.
Current YouTube Partner Program entry, from YouTube Help on October 24, 2026: 1,000 subscribers, plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Shorts watch time in the Shorts feed does not count toward the 4,000 hours. You also need an eligible country, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, advanced features access, and an AdSense for YouTube account. Meeting the numbers starts a review. It does not auto-approve the channel.
YouTube has published a later change for new applicants: starting February 1, 2027, the entry bar becomes 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. YouTube says channels already in the program are not affected by that entry-threshold change. Fan-funding products keep a lower bar (500 subscribers and either 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days). Build for the rule that is in force on the day you apply, and re-read the Help page before you click Apply.
Copyright still applies to music, footage, and a cloned voice. ElevenLabs and Suno both gate commercial use behind a paid plan. Using the free tier because the audio “sounds fine” does not give you the license the pricing page withholds.
Step 3: Voice, picture, and music without painting yourself into a license corner
ElevenLabs Free is 10,000 credits a month and does not include a commercial license. Starter at $6/month is the first plan that does, with 30,000 credits. Professional Voice Cloning is listed on Creator at $22/month. Clone a voice only with permission from the person. For most faceless channels, a stock voice you can keep using is the simpler asset.
Suno Free is 50 credits a day, with no downloads and no commercial rights. Pro is the plan that adds commercial rights: $11/month, or $8/month when billed yearly, with 2,500 credits a month and 20 downloads a month. Premier is $35/month. If the bed is only for a private draft, Free is a sketch tool. If the bed ships on YouTube, use a plan that says commercial rights, or use music you already have a license for.
CapCut Free covers basic editing and templates. Pro is $19.99/month or $179.99/year. CapCut says the price you see after sign-in can differ by platform, and desktop pricing can be higher than mobile. Use it for captions, cuts, and simple b-roll. Descript is the better editor when you want to fix the narration by editing text. Hobbyist is $16/person/month billed annually, and the free plan includes 60 media minutes a month.
invideo AI is a prompt-to-video seat, not a confirmed permanent free plan. Starter is $20/seat monthly or $10/seat on annual billing, with 400 credits. Use it when you want a draft timeline. Use CapCut when you want control of every cut.
HeyGen is optional. It is the right tool when the video is a presenter and you do not want to film. It is the wrong default for a screen tutorial. The head-to-head with Synthesia is HeyGen vs Synthesia.
Step 4: Publish one repeatable episode, then cut Shorts
A workable episode shape:
- Cold open that states the result, under 20 seconds.
- The worked example, with on-screen proof (a sheet, a document, a cited page).
- One mistake and the correction.
- A single next step, not a list of ten.
Opus Clip Free includes 60 credits a month, and free exports are available for 3 days. Starter is $15/month (monthly billing only) with 150 credits, captions, and no watermark. Pro is $29/month or $14.50/month billed annually. Feed it the finished long video. Watch the first three seconds of every clip yourself. A virality score is a sort order, not a publishing decision.
Thumbnails can live in Canva Free. Generate a background only if you will still set the type yourself. A grid of twelve AI faces with random text is how faceless channels start to look interchangeable.
Fit, from published licenses and jobs
| Script assistant | ElevenLabs | CapCut | Suno | Opus Clip | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Needed on episode one | Strong | Strong if you will not record | Strong | Partial | Partial |
| Free tier is enough to learn | Strong | Strong for a test | Strong | Strong for a private sketch | Strong for a trial export |
| Commercial use on the free tier | Your script is yours | No commercial license | Basic editing | No commercial rights | Exports expire in 3 days |
| Lowest paid plan to ship publicly | Often $0 | $6/month | $0 until Pro features matter | $8/month yearly | $15/month |
A week-one checklist
- Write the series sentence and three episode titles.
- Draft episode one in ChatGPT or Claude. Delete every unsourced number.
- Narrate in ElevenLabs Starter if the video will be public.
- Edit in CapCut. Add music you have rights to.
- Upload as public only when the video teaches something the outline promised.
- Cut two Shorts in Opus Clip from that same video.
- Do this four times before you buy a second subscription.
If the assistant bill is the thing you are unsure about, use the buying rule in which AI subscription is worth paying for. A faceless channel does not require a $100 plan in month one.
FAQ
Can a faceless channel join the YouTube Partner Program?
Yes, if the channel meets the eligibility thresholds and the monetization policies. YouTube’s inauthentic-content rule is about mass-produced or repetitive content, and it applies however the video was made. A missing on-camera host is not, by itself, the thing the Help page forbids.
What is the cheapest AI stack that is legal to monetize?
Script help can stay on a free assistant. The two licenses people skip are voice and music. ElevenLabs Starter is $6/month for a commercial license. Suno Pro is $8/month on yearly billing for commercial rights. CapCut Free can edit. That is under $15 before tax if you bill Suno yearly, and it is still more than you need if you record your own voice and use music you already license.
Should I use an AI avatar?
Use HeyGen or Synthesia when the format is a person speaking to camera and filming is the bottleneck. Skip the avatar when the value is a screen recording, a chart, or a document. Compare the two in HeyGen vs Synthesia.
