ElevenLabs Alternatives (2026): Murf, Descript, Speechify, and When to Switch
By Andrew · October 24, 2026
Stay on ElevenLabs if the job is a generated voiceover you will publish. Leave it when the job is a published per-character API rate, a recording you already made, a document you want to hear, a face on camera, or a song. Those are different products. None of them is a cheaper copy of every ElevenLabs tier.
Prices were last verified October 16, 2026. This guide does not rank voices with a score. The switch is about the contract you need: a license, an API rate, an editor, or a listener.
Switch only when the job changed
| The job became | Open this | Confirmed price that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Narration, dubbing, or a voice agent, and ElevenLabs still fits | Stay on ElevenLabs | Starter $6/month for a commercial license. Creator $22/month for Professional Voice Cloning |
| A developer who needs a published character rate | Murf API | Falcon real-time TTS $0.01 per 1,000 characters. Studio-quality TTS $0.03 per 1,000 characters |
| Clean up audio a person already recorded | Descript | Hobbyist $16/person/month billed annually |
| Listen to PDFs and articles | Speechify | Premium $29/month billed monthly. Yearly is advertised as 60% less. The annual dollar total was not confirmed |
| An avatar that speaks | HeyGen | Creator $29/month. See HeyGen vs Synthesia |
| A song or a bed, not a narrator | Suno | Pro $8/month billed yearly for commercial rights. See Suno review |
Figure (switch diagram, not a product screenshot). Alt: A voiceover script stays on ElevenLabs. An API product can move to Murf’s rate card. A human recording moves to Descript. Reading moves to Speechify. A presenter moves to HeyGen. Music moves to Suno. The arrows are job changes, not a quality ranking.
The broader roundup is best AI voice generators. Plan-by-plan detail on the incumbent is ElevenLabs review.
Murf, when the invoice has to be arithmetic
Murf publishes API rates that ElevenLabs’ credit ladder does not:
| API | Published price |
|---|---|
| Text to speech, Falcon (real-time) | $0.01 per 1,000 characters |
| Text to speech, studio quality | $0.03 per 1,000 characters |
| Voice changer | $0.10 per minute |
| Translation | $0.02 per 1,000 characters |
A 1,000-character script at the studio rate is $0.03. That sentence is multiplication of Murf’s card, not a measured bill from our account. New API accounts were described with $10 in credit and 5 concurrent requests. Purchased API credit does not expire, per the plan description we checked. Professional voice cloning on Murf’s API was listed at the enterprise level, not on that self-serve card.
Murf Studio is the voiceover workspace, with 200+ voices and a free workspace of 10 minutes of generation and no downloads. Studio subscription prices did not render on the day we checked. Do not treat ElevenLabs Starter at $6 as cheaper than a Murf Studio seat we could not see. Use Murf for the API rate. Use ElevenLabs Starter when you want a commercial license on a content plan you can already price.
Descript, when the voice already exists
Descript edits recordings. Studio Sound, filler-word removal, and text-based cuts assume a human took the take. It is a weak ElevenLabs replacement if you have a script and no microphone. It is the right replacement if you cloned a voice because the recording was noisy, and the honest fix is cleanup.
| Plan | Annual, per person | Monthly | What you get more of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 60 media minutes, AI tools as a trial |
| Hobbyist | $16 | $24 | 10 hours, 400 AI credits, watermark-free 1080p |
| Creator | $24 | $35 | 30 hours, 800 credits, 4K |
| Business | $50 | $65 | 40 hours, 1,500 credits, translation and dubbing in 30+ languages |
The full product is Descript review. Annual billing saves up to 35% versus monthly at these published rates.
Speechify, for ears
Speechify Premium is a listening product: 1,000+ voices, 60+ languages, speeds up to 4.5×, on the web and major apps. Free is 10 voices at up to 1.5× and text to speech only. Premium is $29/month on monthly billing. The company says yearly billing saves 60% versus monthly. Until checkout shows the annual charge, budget $29 or read the total. Speechify is the wrong tool for a commercial narrator and the right tool for a student who almost bought ElevenLabs to hear a PDF.
HeyGen and Suno are adjacent, not substitutes
HeyGen Creator at $29/month is an avatar plan that includes voice cloning. Buy it when the picture of a person is the product. Buy ElevenLabs when the file is audio. Synthesia is the other presenter path in best AI video generators.
Suno makes songs. ElevenLabs Starter includes commercial use of its music features. That is still not a reason to cancel a song tool, and it is not a reason to buy Suno for a voiceover. Keep the SKUs separate. The channel workflow that uses both is how to start a faceless YouTube channel.
A fit table you can audit
| Requirement | ElevenLabs | Murf API | Descript | Speechify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial generated voiceover | Strong from Starter ($6) | Strong, at a per-character rate | Not the design center | No |
| Price a script before you generate | Weak. Credits, no public minute rate | Strong. $0.01 or $0.03 per 1,000 characters | Not a voice API | No |
| Professional clone on a self-serve plan | Creator, $22 | Not on the self-serve rate card we saw | Voice tools inside an editor | No |
| Repair your own take | Partial | Partial | Strong | No |
| Listen to a document | Partial | Partial | Partial | Strong |
FAQ
What is the closest ElevenLabs alternative?
For generated speech with a forecastable API bill, Murf’s published rates are the closest commercial substitute we could price. For everything else on this page, the alternative wins because the job is different, not because the voice “sounds the same.” We did not run a blind test.
Is Murf cheaper than ElevenLabs?
At the API, Murf is $0.03 per 1,000 characters for studio-quality text to speech. ElevenLabs Starter is $6/month for 30,000 credits. Which is cheaper depends on volume, and ElevenLabs does not publish a credits-per-character figure in the summary we used. Compare them after one real script on each free path.
Should I use Descript instead of cloning my voice?
If you can record, Descript is the more direct tool. Clone a voice when you cannot record, you have permission, and you have accepted the plan gate in how to clone a voice with ElevenLabs.
